Finding a coral point (picture heavy)
« on: August 13, 2011, 05:58:37 pm »
This one's another one of those pieces I've been avoiding for a while.  I wasn't even sure there was enough good coral in there for a point.
I scraped a lot of the chalky cortex off before I started and really isolated the platforms on every major thinning flake.

After a lot of lucky swings and a little studying...I got her thinned down.
I think you call this a Newnan.

Thats a nice one. Angle the base a little more and make it narrower then bring the wings out straight instead of an angle and it'd be a mighty fine Newnan. And, a little trick on that cortex, soak it in acid and it will dissappear. ;) You did a heck av'a job finding a point in that small piece.

Wow that's awesome. Beautiful even. When we say coral we are talking about things from under the sea right? Or is that a nickname for some type flint, chert, obsidian? Great looking point!

is agatized/silicified coral, was the living real deal coral under water but now turned to stone( not to be mistaken for the song by E.L.O.)

thats a dang fine newnan right there, I will have to put some coral back for you now that you got it down.

Shannon.. hard to believe that point was hiding in that little rock. Heck of a job digging it out! I only have a few pieces of coral and they are not very large and covered with cortex, so this gives me some hope something is hinding in them. I would have never thought to use a file or scrapper to try and get rid of some of the cortex, so thanks for that tip.

Mullet..  What type of acid?

muriatic acid like the stuff for pools, it works decent on some of the thicker chalky cortex, but doent do a thing for the thin skinned cortex.
