when given advice from experts....
« on: August 11, 2011, 11:49:25 pm »
A month or so ago i cut some osage and split it out.  Someone on here told me to get the sapwood off asap or id wish I had later.  But I was busy moving and such and didnt get to it til today, i gotta tell you...he was right.  Now that the sapwood is off do I need to seal the stave again?
I have nothing witty to say.......

What they both said YES, if a stave has moisture to lose I think good insurance is to seal it up IMO, Some white woods arent as bad about checking so they dont need sealed but if your not sure ask or just seal it to be safe

Yep, ASAP.  :) :)  keep it in as cool a place as you have and out of the sun. Osage will check in a big hurry. :)

I know nothing about Osage, or other "exotic" bow wood...but one thing I do know: If in doubt then seal it!!...I have never heard of a stave being ruined by sealing;-)!

Cheers

Its a big, fat pain in the boot peeling it green or dry to me! I leave the bark and sapwood on most of mine so I dont have to spend tons of cash on sealer. Not to mention if you get a big load of osage and get 30-40 splits from it, it can take days on end to peel and seal all of it. My whitewoods get peeled and sealed within hours of tipping the tree over.
Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.

glad i got on here this morning.  I was going out of town and planned to leave the staves in my expedition while I was gone.  Bet they wouldnt have lasted long in the south georgia heat.  Anyhow got lucky, found some poly and gave em each two heavy coats, when dry ill bring em into my office and they will be in air conditioned comfort til next week when i go trim them down.
