osage backed hickory
« on: June 28, 2007, 03:04:53 pm »
This is a bow i just finished for a friend of my great nephew. I made it from a realy bad piece of hickory that i just sawed the back flat on. I originaly backed it with brown paper, and covered the paper with rainbow trout skins. But the backing failed just as i got it finished. So i removed it and rebacked it with a single growth ring of osage. It came out at 20#@15"   38 1/2" N to N  1 1/4" at fades tapering to 1" 7"from tips 1/2" at nocks. Wraps on the limbs are part of the original trout skins.Tip overlays are purple heart. I flight shot it just for fun and longest yardage was 93 yards with shortest at 89 yards. 300gn arrow.

When i glued up the osage back i put in some reflex. It held just over two inches off of the form. It still has about 1/2" imediatly after unstringing and just over 1" two minutes later.

Cool little bow, and quite unique, also. I've seen several hickory-backed osage bows, but don't recall ever seeing an osage-backed hickory. Nice detail work, too.

Great little bow. I'd use a picture of your nephew drawing it back if you get around to it. For an article about Kid's Bows for later this fall.
Got this this poney bow set up for June Backed Bow of the Month.

Definitely the first osage backed anything I have seen.  Great bow, and a great save.  Justin
