Canvas as backing ??
« on: August 04, 2011, 11:12:09 pm »
I picked up a real nice 3/4" x 1-3/4" x 72" Oak board with parallel grain running end to end . I have it cut out and a walnut piece for handle glued and drying now . How would untreated 10 oz. cotton canvas be for a backing glued on with Titebond III ?

It should work just fine although personally I'd go with silk because it is lighter and just as strong.Ron
If we can't help each other what is the point of being here?

I've used that light canvas as backing on a couple dozen hickory board bows, including some boards that should have never been brought home!  Works great.  Silk, being just as strong, and lighter in weight would indeed be a better choice....unless you don't have it, then use whatcha got.  Old cotton bedsheet material would work, too.
Guns have triggers. Bicycles have wheels. Trees and bows have wooden limbs.

Nearly any kind of cloth or paper will work just fine.  Someone a year or so ago used tissue paper.  The lighter the better, but I've even used denim without any trouble.

I've been looking at some "duck canvas" that is pretty heavy duty.  Glad to know it will work.  It has a nice medieval look to it and I figured I could make a quivor or a game bag with the other 98% that is left from backing a bow. ;)  I love that oatmeal color.  But then I love oatmeal.
