Bow for my nephew (pic added again, finished)
« on: July 14, 2011, 10:21:52 am »
As i broke the last one i was making for him i had to try again. As im new to this seasoned wood is scarce so i recycled the limbs from my first try.
A split sledgeshaft of hickory.
It is backed with a thin cloth for safety and is tillerd out to just over 25" so it have a margin of over 3" as he draws 22. top limb bends a bit too close to the handle (Again)but only at max draw.
I just hope the low weight makes it hold up over the summer. At the rate they grow at that age ill have to make a new next year anyway :D
Its 54" ttt 26# @25"  1 3/8" at widest and just shy of 1/2" at the tips.

That's a great looking bow! Your nephew is lucky! If he hasn't already, maybe this will get him interested in making wood bows  ;)

Very nice work! Lucky boy!
Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.

Ran out of battery so i took one with the cellphone.this is at 25" and a bit and as you see it almost hinges at the top fade, but only do after 23"so i guess it will make the summer..hopefully.

That's a nice gift. Im sure he ll have fun with it. :)

Seeing as it is a lower poundage bow and hickory I think it'll hold up till he outgrows it and needs a new one. The reason its hinging on the fade is due to incorrect fades. They are to steep and drop to fast at an angle and before it hits the widest point of the limb.  You want the fade more radiused and have it meet the widest part of your limb where the limb begins and usually folks start there taper. Yours falls short before it gets to the widest part and beginning of your limb. Just some helpful hints here.  ;)

Yeah,i learned about the transition the hard way with my boo/oak bow,i made theese side by side so i did the same mistake on both.
I hope you are right that it will hold up due to less power and material.
My guess is i will have to make a new next year anyway...unless he discover girls ;D then he wont need one for a while.

Was visiting the family up north and delivered the bow to my nephew, after just a short instruction on shooting and a longer on safety he was shooting pretty good.
the pic is from the start, his stance got a lot better after some coaching and practice. He is a bit kamerashy btw :D
