"Six nipples" black locust 125# bow
« on: June 30, 2011, 12:40:16 pm »
This is black locust pyramid bow. Made of medium quality wood, stave with propeller twist, different crown (that requires almost triangular cross section at some parts), a lot of sapwood in the middle of the heartwood ring and six ugly knots that made it very stiff and problematic. It is 70" ntn, 125# at 29" , 2" wide at the fades, 1/2 at nocks (they are made off dead pine knots), 1 x 1" at non-bending handle. Two times heatgun light tempered. First time at 10" and second after finall tillering. It seems that the second one did not have any effects. Because last few months air moisture was between 70% and 95% this wood was not enough dry, so it causes 1 3/5 set. It could be maybe less but I didn't have enough time to finish my drying box. Finish is pig fat coated with bee wax.
This bow was made in june last year. This winter I draw it few times to 30-31" and causes some crysales. I broke the rule: do not draw longer that you intended. I also tried this: burried it braced for 45 minutes in the snow at -15C and after that draw it immediatly to full draw without problems.

Howdy,   It looks like an excellent result for such an unpromising piece of wood.  Ron

Wow, that's probably the heaviest flatbow design I've seen so far.  You going to leave it or try to bring down the weight and remove the chrysals?
Thanks for posting that one, very nice.

No, I will not touch anything. Some crysals do not make me problem (I am guilty for that, anyway), set is the same as one year before and after a lot of time at brace (all day in forest). This is more than I expected from this stave, no correction needed.  ;D

Druid, that is an amazing bow! Gotta love those puffy nipples! I've seen plenty of bow limbs that made me think of shapely legs with pretty slippers at the end but nipples are a whole new perversion ::) ;D

I like those knots. I use to make heavy bows. If you cut a shelf and center shot those heavy bows they'll have better cast. Any bow for that matter. NICE

This one really made me smile--I love those huge knots, and it's easily the heaviest pyramid bow I've seen here. Nice work!
