« on: June 13, 2011, 11:19:51 pm »
Hey   guys,,, I  have  a  62 n2n maple pyramid bow www\flipped tips,  she's  35# @ 18"  now  tiller  looks  good  so  far,,,,,,,,I'm  going to  give it  to  someone  and I  want  a  little  more  security  for  a  backing,,, I  was  thinking  a  thin  Douglas fir  backing  more  for  splinter protection??  the  fir  is  less  than  1\8"  more like 1\16"  I'm  not  looking  for  a  power  backing  but  splinter  control  as I  don't know  who will  get  the bow  and   I  allways  put  silk over  that      just wondering what  your  thoughts  were   thanks  as  allways   JEFFW

I'd think the silk alone would do the job.  Rawhide is nice, too...but that is my personal prejuduce showing!

Maple stave?  I've always wanted to try one of those.

If it draws sweet you could call it "Syrup".   ;D

I used a paper bag on my maple pyramid at 44 pounds, works like a charm.  Sized the back, then put on the paper and brushed on glue until it was saturated, sand and repeat once or twice.

Silk..... Super strong and won't add a ton of weight and require complete re-tiller like a wood backing.
Everything happens for a reason, sometimes the reason is you made a bad decision.

I agree with the silk. If you get the nice stuff from a fabric store it dries clear. Or Goodwill and Salvation Army sell it cheap all day long, just take the ties and shirts apart. ;)
