Stinky Canada Goose feathers!
« on: June 12, 2011, 06:18:21 pm »
Yesterday I collected some molted Canadian goose feathers from a local pond.  I froze them overnight, began cutting and sanding them and noticed how the smelled badly of wet dog! Is this normal or did I just run across a flock of stinky birds?

Ya know, I've often heard golfers on the course saying things about "those stinking Canada geese"!   >:D

Chances are they are smelling of lakewater.  Give 'em a good rinse in freshwater and lay 'em in the sun to dry.  Once they are good and dry they shouldn't bother you again.  Just don't hunt in the rain, hehehe.

Haha, that makes sense. The pond I picked these up from is pretty scummy and gross. I'll be sure to rinse them right away! Thanks!

That and the fact that all Goose feather smell when Damp....this could be the reason too....

Osceola turkeys stink like an old Lab after a hard rain. When they are near by in the Swamp you can smell them.

If you have to pull the trigger, is it really archery?

I use a lot of pick ups matter offact I have ponds I go to just for that. Geese molt around the first of JUNE. I put mine under running water then just lay them out in the sun. This really stiffens them up for cutting I think it's as good as freezeing.
