Ok hickory backing?
« on: June 06, 2011, 03:21:25 pm »
am getting ready to glue up a HBO. The backing is quarter sawn has good straight grain for about 55". But the last 15", the grain veers off to the right some.

My blank is going to be 1.5" parallel from fades up to 10" and then pryamids to 1/2". The veering is going to run parellel with the left side of the pyramid to the tips to give you an idea. And the right side of the pyramid is of course going to run off.

i realize if it was dead straight grain, it would run off evenly off both sides of the parallel.

I would take a picture, but its hard to capture hickory grain.

Never worked with hickory backing, and hoped its going to be easier than boo.

Unless it runs off drastically you will be fine.  Hickory is shockingly resilient....
Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder's eye on the Last Day.

Thanks. I took a piece of the trimmings, with the runoff and was able to bend to bend quite a bit before breaking.
