five points i made today
« on: May 29, 2011, 10:07:52 pm »
I was trying to use use some small material I had some I made these point from mostly difficult scrap.  The first was burlington and the rock was real thick so I punched some platforms backwards on the turtles back and it worked. The second was not a real challenge just a thin flake but had great color, the third was real fun it was made from a broken center of a failed blade.  I practiced thinning from small platforms and everyone of them worked wow! I was able to cut the thickness in half without too much side lost. The fourth was from that high ridge that leaping bare sent as well as the fifth one.

I call that "scrap knappin" It's fun to see what you can do with stuff like that. Sometime you'd be surprised what's hiding in the throw away pile. It'll also make you a better knapper too.
Well done! Any of those would kill an animal.
Be thankfull for all you have, because no matter how bad you think it is...it can always be worse.

Time, dedication, cuts, tons of broken rock, a wife, and perhaps a few girlfriends are some of what it takes in becoming a skilled flint knapper!!!

It is nice to practice on stuff you really don't care about.  I seem to take chances that I might not otherwise take.

Those came out nice. I do the same thing, I've got my good scrap pile and my garbage pile. I'm starting to get more like Billy Berger, I'd rather fling a real, sharp, average point at a critter than my pretty ones.
