suprise in flint
« on: May 08, 2011, 11:17:40 pm »
Got quite a surprise today when I started knapping a piece of flint I recently purchased. I found Gold spec's, not flakes in the various pieces I was flaking off. But according to a site on the internet what I have is Iron Pyrite, since I couldn't put a scratch in it with my knife. So since I was trying to get at least one knapped head from each piece of Flint I concidered this one a scrap piece, since I had all this Gold(ha ha). The feeling was good til the knife test.  So, is there any other obsidian that has this same characteristic with the spec's.

Snowflake  obsidian has ash specks in it.It's knappable but the specks need to be small or it's hard to pressure flake through the specks.
