Growth ring violation on a maple stave???
« on: May 08, 2011, 11:59:12 pm »
Hey everyone,

I was working on a maple stave today and I accidentally went too fast and violated a growth ring on the back as I was removing the cambium layer. The stave is about 54" Long and the violation is about 10" from the tip so I can't just cut that part off. I was wondering if I should just take the stave down to the next growth ring even though it is maple, or should I just back the bow. I was really hoping to leave the bow unbacked though, if taking it down to the next growth Ring would be a viable option. Any feedback would be great. Thanks.

Go down to the next ring.

Better to take it down to the next ring.  A little extra time spent now might spare you a lot of heartache when it is close to being done.  ;)
