Ebony options / Phenolic sources

CAn you guys please advise me of some good sources of black phenolic for risers or some wood option to ebony?   I love the color accent ebony offers plus it's density especially in risers...

Phenolic isn't very primitive, so we probably won't know where to get it...

Bingham's. It's a pain to work, stinks, and is a lot less fun to use than fun colored wood though

Del I prefer to work with wood believe me, but finding ebony and when you do it's cost is WOW!

Don't know if this will apply, but I've used black leather dye on various woods, and it goes on really black.  I've used it on red oak, port orford cedar (arrow shafts), and I think, maple.  Goes on just as black on all, even your hands, and a lot cheaper than ebony  .

woodworkers use holly because it is so white, it takes a black dye really well. even heard it was used on piano keys for the ebony.

Black leather dye is good for a self bow that will be finished with oil and wax but I don't like it for applications where pieces will be glued or cozated with Epoxy or varnish. They don't actually stick to it as well as you may think.
 Aniline dye is always a better choice for that. Aniline comes in Ebony black and is easy to use.

When using Urethanes I just use Minwax ebony stain. After four or fie coats the bow is BLACK and shiny. Sure takes a nice finish after that

If you are bent on using phenolic, make your own.  It is real easy.  black material and a good two part epoxy is all you need.  If you look on the internet, im sure you will find many sites for making it.
