A couple of Hic-backed Beefwoods

Heres a couple of bows I finished last fall and never posted any pics of. One of them is 50# at 28" and 65" long and 1" wide in the middle down to 5/16" at the tips. The other is 70# at 28" and 68" long and 1 1/4" wide down to 3/8 tips. They both have about 1/2" resting set. I came across the beefwood on an old deck I was tearing off a house, it was faded to a dull grey color and I wasnt really even sure what kind of wood it was. After I sanded it down I figured it was beefwood or bloodwood. I dont know if it needed backing or not and I kinda wish I would have glued in some reflex. It is pretty wood and extremely hard and dense.

70# at close to fulldraw.( I could only hold it at fulldraw for a second and my wife didnt time the pic exactly right)

2 Very nice long bows, the profiles on those are really good......a couple of classics for sure.

 Nice save. Beefwood is more often than not Massaranduba. It's called beefwood because it really does resemble a steak when freshly cut.

Those rock!  Beautiful tiller on those full draw shots...I wish Teak or Mahogany had decent / better bow making properties because I have access to a TON of that but...such as life.

I think massaranduba is the proper name for it. Beefwood is easier to spell though. It is very similar to ipe. I've only worked with ipe on a couple of bows but thats what this stuff reminded me of. It wasnt my favorite wood to work with by far. The 50# bow is a screamer, it shoots as hard as any bow I've made so far.

  Beautiful bows, your wood looks more like ipe than beefwood to me. Was it pinkish red when it was fresh sanded? Steve

Badger, I've put it next to a piece of ipe for comparison and theyre not really anywhere close to the same color. All the ipe I've seen is brown and this stuff is kind of dark red plum colored. I used tungoil finish on them and the more coats I put on the darker red they got.
