Second thread----- Second Bow w/ squirrel tail silencers
« on: April 12, 2011, 09:48:00 pm »
Finished up my second bow. Its another Red Oak Board Bow.

This one is 68in N-T-N and it draws 51# at 27in.
The limbs are 1.5in wide outside the handle and tapers from mid limb to 1/2in at the nocks.
The handle wrap is an egg tanned squirrel hide and the silencers are made from one squirrel tail split and wrapped into the string fresh. Then as the "green" tail dries and hardens it will lock itself into the string.

Here is the handle before and after the squirrel cover.

Hope you guys like it. I left the lower limb 1/2in closer at mid-limb to the string on both of my bows per instructions from TBB vol III to prevent lower limb set. This bow only has 30 arrows through it aft the limbs were worked in but the Pyramid bow I posted yesterday now has a few hundred shots at full draw and has only 1/2in of set when first unstrung.

Bow number three will come this weekend. Its gonna be a silver maple pyramid bow that will draw 50-55# at 28in.

I like the idea of using the squirrel tail and hide. I've got a bunch of tails in the freezer. Let us know later how they hold up.
I made rawhide from some of the squirrel hides, works well for handle wraps etc.

failure is an option, everyone fails, it's how you handle it that matters.

I've been using the squirrel tail silencers for years on store bought bows. One set will easily last a full hunting season, some last a couple years.

cool! very well done! I agree with others like the silencers! I also really like your arrows well done! Sure is satisfying to make your own bow and fling a hand made arrow from it ;D verses buying it all ;) o ya that grip looks comfy and i bet it would be nice in the winter lol
my friends think my shops a mess, my wife thinks I have too much bow wood, my neighbors think im redneck white trash and they may all be right on the money!!

Thanks everyone! I'm gonna rough out my third bow tomorrow and then (If I can wait) finish it this weekend.
As far as the "huntin woods" I'm gonna try to take my first archery deer this year and I'm gonna use a bow that I make!
I love this site. You guys are such an inspiration to make more bows. I just got some Osage staves (Acutus made a thread about it titled "opportunity knocks")
I know that he hasn't put any pics up but this is the bounty that we'll soon be working on.

I'm gonna make a character bow out of one of the small pieces for shallow water bow fishing.

Bow #3 is postponed, just got out of hospital, emergency appendectomy, will get to third as soon as I am able. It will be the above mentioned Osage bow.
