My first flute! (..added video)
« on: April 12, 2011, 01:38:33 am »
Well I used Michael C's Buildalong to try my hand at building a flute.  I didn't have a router so I had to use some cabinet scrapers I found at Woodcraft.  It worked pretty well I just wish I would have made the sound chamber walls a little bit straighter than I did that way I could feel safer making the flute walls a little thinner.  I don't think I did too bad for my first flute.  The totem/bird is supposed to be a song bird shape, I may add more detail later.  It is osage and the flute itself is some of that cheap cedar they carry at Lowes.  It is in the key of F, and for some strange reason the bottom two holes came out considerably smaller than the rest of them.  It is in tune though and as soon as I get good enough I am going to post a song.  The only thing about this flute I have noticed compared to listening to others play is mine sounds a little bit windier or breathier than others but I believe it is because I went a little too deep with the sounding board.  It plays and is in tune which is far better than I expected it to go.  I really wish I had another flute here to mess with so I can put a finish on this one, LOL.   ;D ;D  I can't seem to put this one down long enough.  :)  Thank you a ton Michael for posting the buildalong.  I know mine is not as pretty as yours I am just glad I got a working flute.  Maybe on my next one I will try and make it pretty.  :)  Well here it is, whaddaya think?  thanks for looking!

Great job on the flute Josh. I got a flute Michael made for me and I found it pretty easy to learn to play.--Josh

...here's a vid I shot of me playing it sounds a little off in the higher notes I guess i need to check my tuning again.  Don't make fun of my playing either I really don't know what I am doing yet but I am learning.  I've only been playing for like 3 days and this is the only flute I have ever played so far.

That is awesome  Josh, I have only made two now and I'm still learning to play as well. We will all have to get together for a flute jam at the Classic ;D

Cool! 8)  The holes on mine, are a little further apart, and I have to stretch my hand a bit, but I need to find my booklet on building flutes, and how to play it.  That sounds fine to me.  I love my flute, I just need to learn how to play it.  Good job Josh.

Hey man that sounds great for your first flute, the flue is always the booger in building these and instead of messing that one up by toying with it to much I would leave it. I think you did an excellent job and if that is your first one then you will surpass what I'm making in no time. Glad to see you were able to muck your way through my build along and get one sounding this good. I think after looking at the flute, even though you probably used my measurements, that the holes look a bit to low on the flute and may be a bit to close together, that might be causing your holes to be smaller at the bottom.

Sounds good.  I got one of Michael's in a trade and it is awesome.  I will be bringing mine to the Classic too.  I don't play, but wanting to learn some.

Thank you everyone!   I was given a router for my birthday so it should drastically reduce my build time for the next few... I wanna try some different keys.  Thanks again.  :)
