tallahatta pieces

knocked out a couple spalls from jeffs tallahatta. 4" scotts bluff is a little thick at a 5/16" but im happy i kept it from breaking after breaking the first two pieces i tried. cant put any palm pressure on this stuff or i snap it. second one is a midland i made with indirect percussion. a hair over 3/16" thats just shy of 5mm. some of the originals are like 3mm. scary thin. one side has 3 over shot flakes, the other 1 . 2 3/4" long, 1 1/8" wide.

thanks guys. jesse over at paleo there is a big discussion on midlands and how some of them are done with very clean overshot flakes. when i looked at the pieces they were talking about they looked just like some of the bifaces ive done that were overshot on both sides. except they are 3mm thick! im still working on the cumberlands too. jumping from thin to ridge line is quite the challenge. =)

I love hitting that stuff. But I'll start out with a big, wide, fairly thin, preform and usually end up with a short thick point or a broken big one.

ed i treat this stuff like it is two different rock. cause it is. that white band in the midland knaps like flour. so i set up the platform different than the glassy part

I am very impressed with that Midland.  Most of the old points I find are usually fairly thick, about 1/3" (8mm) or slightly thicker.  Bill
