« on: March 21, 2011, 03:35:01 pm »
Went on a road trip to central Penna to do some Blacksmithing. First off i want to thank our Host an teacher Chris Ireland an family for having us over. Chris is a great guy an good teacher an excellent smitty. Here's some pictures of some of the stuff everyone made this weekend. Just to top off a great weekend we were going down the road to camp an spotted this 4x5 Bull Elk enjoying a nice spring day. Frosting on the cake on a great weekend roady trip.  Bob

Nice pix.  Looks like fun.
Did not know there were any elk in Penna.

Two questions:
1.  How good is R/R spike steel?  Will it make a good ax or adz?
2.  Is that RineO?

I'd depends on the type of spike some have more carbon in them then others the axes I have made all held a great edge so I think you can make a nice adz from them

David, Your going to have to ask Chris about Quality of steel , I know itis high carbon an i'm pretty good at burning them up when they get thin ??? ??? ???. Yea thats my neighbor Ryano an his brother Pat , an Jimmy S an My son Ryan an of course Chris. WE got quite a few elk in Penna. WE have a lottery draw season an they kill some huge Bulls in certain areas. I think its $10 to apply an if your drawn I believe its $ 50 for license. I believe they give out about 50 tags a year. Lottery is open to non res. also.

Yep. A great time was had by all. Thanks again Chris. That's the closest look I've ever got at a bull elk, even closer than when we were hunting them in colorado.... ;D Bob did you take any pictures down around Chris's camp? It's a awesome set up and a beautiful setting to boot !

Pappy, Chris and Noah are coming to the classic if all goes well.   ;D
