Riser wood combos
« on: March 18, 2011, 06:53:27 pm »
I'm building a pair of BBI's one for myself and one for the PA trade with this kind of skin.

I'm wanting to go with a really dark themed bow so I want nice dark riser woods and such.  I have a chunk of black Palm.  I'm trying to come up with additional woods that may look nice with with this skin.  I'm thinking of wenge.  I really like the white and black ebony but WHOA the price of that stuff is high.  Any thoughts?

Ebony is available in blocks at Woodworkers Emporium that are about 9" x 3" x 3" for around $40 last time I was there. I don't know if that is a good price or the right size for what you are looking for; however, they have several other dark exotic woods (not sure what they are) as well for using on a lathe to make bowls and such in block form. I would be happy to take a drive over if you'd like and report my findings.

Bowmakers are a little bent, but knappers are just plain flaky.

Yeah $40 for that size piece is what I've been seeing.  I'm up for other options too...just trying to get other peoples opinions on what would look nice with that skin.

Zebrawood may look cool. It will darken slightly over time. But the black and white stripes match the black and white spots of the skin well, I think.

Nice ID Bucks.  They are cool snakes.  This was an old female that belonged to a friend.

I've been kicking around the Zebra wood idea too...

Pat thought of that but the black walnut locally is not dark enough for what I'm picturing.

You obviously don't read any of my posts LOL ;D
The snake pictured isn't the skin I'm using, it's just a picture of the same kind of snake.  The skin I have is from a snake that has already died.....I will NOT back a bow with a snake that died from other than natural causes or tires.

How about really dark IPE with maple accent stripes????or maple with wenge should look nice too.
I did IPE and maple nocks on a friends bow actually....used the left-overs from the riser cut-outs.
Sorry couldn't find the nock pic...

NTD, In one of your post you mentioned you had some black palm for a riser.  I saw some at a local Woodcraft and the guy mentioned it would splinter if using a wood rasp.  How do you shape the riser if you can't use a rasp?  Treelimb
