can you ID this wood?
« on: March 22, 2011, 08:25:17 pm »
I cut this during deer season, it had leaves like a maple but all the trees were small diameter like this one, the first one I split with a machete and a hammer and it split like a corkscrew so I cut this one on the bandsaw, gonna try and make a little horse bow with it thank's, Bub

Did it just dry like that or did you dry it bend it or let it dry in a forum?
"The way of heaven is like the bending of a bow-
the upper part is pressed down,
the lower part is raised up,
the part that has too much is reduced,
the part that has too little is increased."

There is another Maple that goes by the common name "David's Maple" that has bark that looks similar to that.  It is a nice looking tree in the summer or winter.

toomantnots, I tied down the center and put some blocks under the limbs where I wanted them and tied the ends down, figured on putting 1 or 2 layers of sinew on it an see what I can get, Bub

Looks good I learned a long time ago and but reflex in all of my staves like that. I think it's way better than heating your reflex in. Very few people do it like this for some reason.
Looks like striped maple to me also.

Stripped maple(moose wood) is pretty weak and probably not good for bows. I have heard of folks making arrows from it though.

There was a guy named Val that gave me 2 staves of Striped Maple. It is physically very light , but has amazing elasticity. I made some great bows from it. Basically the same size as you've pictured here. I kept the limbs wide for most of the length and tapered the last 8" or so. What will it hurt to try - you may be surprised.
