I have a little project that I thought I would share. The following photos are of the shed that was built for the kiln and the design of the kiln. First you should know that this design is based on numbers from varyous kiln building books and is untested! The base is the fire box, it has three major componets : the mouse holes/ash pit, above the grate is the coal bed, and above that rails that hold the logs during combustion. There are two doors (brick has not been set in yet), one for the stoking and the other for the coal / ember bed. The kiln chamber will be an old electric kiln placed on top of the fire box. The bottom will have a hole cut out of it so that the heat can enter. The top will have a chimney. Photos to follow. This kiln will have a dual purpose to woodfire ceramics and treat flint.
