picking up a couple pounds?
« on: March 03, 2011, 05:50:04 pm »
Will tempering the belly give me three pounds?  I just barely missed my target weight.  I was also thinking of taking a half inch off of both ends.  Which one would you guys recommend.

Another question I have is will heat cause the glue to release.  I used USRAC.

How long is your bow and how long is your draw?  I would advise cutting off an inch instead of heating the bow since it is a glue-up.  I know Urac is a heat-treated glue but I wouldn't chance it if it were my bow.  If you only missed your weight by 3 pounds and the tiller looks good on it why not just leave it and aim for a higher weight next one?  I have messed up plenty of bows trying to "doctor" them into something they were  never meant to be.  Good luck whichever way you decide to go with it!  :)

As Josh said the length and draw length would determine if shorting it would be wise.
One thing you could test is to tie down the string 1/2 inch from the ends. Just clamp it down with a spring clamp and wrap some string around to hold the bowstring down temporarily. Then test it to see what you get.

I wouldn't heat it but might cut it off, what is your draw length ? If it ant over 26/27 you can take a inch off each end and pick up 4 or 5 lbs. at least. :)

Took half an inch off of each end and picked up exactly 3 pounds.  Sometimes things do work out the way they should.
