61" Hick stick?
« on: February 17, 2011, 07:35:22 pm »
Just completed a 61" ntn hickory self bow. It is 45#@26" Is this pushing the limits of hickory? I heat treated the belly and the tiller turned out good. It has a 6" stiff handle section. Just wondering if this bow will hold up long term.

I have some hickory self bows that Ken 75 made, they are in mid 50# range and all are smaller than yours 52" to 56", draw easily to my 27+" draw and after 100's of arrows they are just gettin better. Yesterday I retillered a 55" NA Pyramid that he made because I couldn't pull it.....the weight was well above 70# and finally got it down to the low 60#'s.

Based on my experience, I dont think you are anywhere near the limits of Hickory.....JMO

you're not even close, I've made several 60"to 64" hickory bows up to 60# @ 29" draw, and all I've built is board bows, let's see some pics,  Bub

Hickory's my favoret bow wood. I made several in the 70# range 64 to 66" range. And alot in 50# range at 58 to 60"s. Know a guy that builds his 55 to 58  all the time.
