Third times the charm I hope
« on: February 13, 2011, 09:43:03 pm »
Think I got it this time, found a whole tree line of what I think is black locust. Still some pods on the trees and the little ones around have small thorns. The log checked almost as soon as it was cut, good thing I cut it long. Lets see what you guys think.Got my tree book and I think it looks right.

Bark looks like old locust to me. All the locust around me has holes and bugs/borers or whatever in it. I went looking for some a while ago, and when I found a hidden away glad of some, it sure did seem obvious why it was supposedly cherokee favorite bow wood. The whole glade looked like perfect straight staves with bark. Like a bamboo forest they were so straight, mostly all sapplings that is. But they all has bugs holes in em and ants living in em. You could see the huge holes from the outside.

Yea I noticed the dumb dog after  I posted. This is from a new timber my brothers and I got to hunt and cut firewood, and of course bow wood for me. They use training wheel bows, and think I'm crazy for shooting stick and string. So far I've found BL, honey locust, walnut and oak, also think I found a hophornbeam  tree, waiting for leaves to make sure. Goldmine I think.

Yep !  That's the B.L.  I am working on one now and have made a few with staves I cut back in the 90's   Get the bark off and seal the back and the ends. Let it set for a couple of years and make you a bow. It does not tolerate mistakes on the back well at all. But it makes a wonderful bow. Very pretty wood too !  I have recently decided to seek out a BIG black walnut tree to cut and split. I will find that log and I will let them staves sit and cure for a few years. I think that is the trick, cut, cut, cut and let it sit and after just a couple of years, you will have all the bow wood you could want.  That stuff you have in the picture has nice tight rings. Good work ! !  '  Frank

Sparrow, that is exactly what I am doing, I cut bow wood every time I go to cut firewood or try to. Sailordad, I will see what I can find, when I go out again.
