Newbie to the forum and bowbuilding
« on: February 12, 2011, 10:18:36 pm »
This is my latest try at a bow. It's Ash backed Ash. I glued it up last night and have been shaping and tillering a bit. This is my second attempt at this Ash Ash combo. The first one was a narrower thicker try. I changed the limb shape this go around. 1 3/4" straight limbs out to a foot from the tips then an even taper to  1/2" the last foot. the bow is 61" NTN. I'm shooting for 30lb at 26" draw. I've cut the profile and the width on the band saw. I've got  the long string on it and I'm about ready to brace it.
Last bow blew up right after I braced it and started exercising it. I'm a little nervous :o

Any Suggestions on Tillering at this point? Top limb Right.

looking good
but i would get that off the long string and on to a short one
the long string wont show true tiller properly like a short one will
i always wanted a harley, untill it became the "thing to ride"
i ride because i love to,not to be part of the crowd

I scraped 20 times per limb from midpoint to tips. It looks better to me. i exercised it 50 times then I put the short string on and  I exercised it another 50 times.
I think the bottom (left) limb is strong mid limb to tip. What do you think?

Welcome! Tiller is excellent but your brace height seems high. My bows are braced around 7 in string to back of bow.

Nice work, I like it

I am a newbie! I have built one less than stellar tillered kids bow. I have read TBB vol 2 and 4,  looked at nearly every build along I have been able to find, watched a bunch of Youtube videos, and I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night ;D
J/K it was actually Tuesday not last night...
A lot can be said for looking at lots of pictures!!!

Thanks Jesse, I like lots of feedback. Good or Bad It either makes me feel more confident in doing what I need to do or straightens my butt out to do the right thing!

Nice to have you here toymaker ;D I hope to see full draw and unbrased pictures when you are done, I have heard ash takes excessive set unless design is right and im going to be getting some ash here soon and never have worked with it. What type of ash is that? Thanks and great job!
my friends think my shops a mess, my wife thinks I have too much bow wood, my neighbors think im redneck white trash and they may all be right on the money!!

Well I've hit target weight of 30lbs. I think the tiller has gotten a little better. The gizmo is a big help! I've added walnut tips and overlay.
Here's some pictures. With Georges comment and seeing my son hold the bow, I agree the brace height is a little high. It's at 7 3/4". So I need to make another string. It has 1" of set total. It started out with a 1/2" after gluing.

The bow is excellent. But to see a father making a bow for his son is even a more excellent way. I think you just made my day. My youngest daughter, who is 29 years, just said, "Dad, I want to start shooting with you." I'll be  making a board bow for her from a red oak board I found in my Dad's shop. Keep up the good work, toymaker. Jawge
