Does boiling a stave actually work cause I still have that oak stave and I was wondering if boiling it actually work in giving a stave the right kind of bend.

Heat is used to bend wood. Doesn't matter if it is boiling, steaming or dry heat. Some woods do better with one or the other but other than that is doesn't matter.
