SUCCESS AT LAST

well i,like most other knappers,occaisonally try and make something thats a little more difficult
well more difficult for me at least
i have been trying,since i started this 2 years ago or so,to make a truly succensfull clovis style point
i have made many with one really nice flute
or wit httwoo flutes that are going off at angles and not straight down the blade
these "failed attempts" i usually turn into something else or give away(bevan got one recently  ;) )
well i wen out hunting this morning and when i came home i went donw to my winter knapping spot in the basement
first i finisihed up an ABO knapped obsidion knife blade
then i grabbed another piece of obsidion and reduced it with an moose billet
by time i had it reduced down to a preform it looked like cloved style blade
well i dont have many good antler tines for flaking and didnt want to mess this up
so i grabbed my copper tipped Ishi stick and did the pressure flaking and set up two median ridged(one on each face )
theni set up a nipple and grabbed my moose billet again and "WHACK"
made i nice straight flute on the first face
so back to the Ishi stick and set up a nipple on the other face
once again i grabbed the moose billet "WHACK"
i couldnt believe
i made a SECOND nice straight flute down the second face
i had never made two nice flutes on the same point before
after that i said "the heck with this,i am done for the day"
didnt want to ruin it so i didnt even put an edge on it yet
heres a pic of the clovis along with the all ABO knofe blade

And the moral of the story is...smack the snot out of it the first time.  When I was learning how to make a clovis, after I had broken a few, I would "love tap" my nipple and not get a flute but I would mess up my nipple.  I would have to rework the base, those first taps would mess up my ridge for just a little but I didn't want to lose more length soo...poor nipple, bad or no flute or even worse, good flute on one side and by the time I made corrections on the other, my flute would be damn near gone.  Finally, somebody said "It's just a rock, Hit it!"  So I did and it worked.  I still break one every now and then, it happens, but it happens a lot less.  Bill
