Reflex/Deflex Longbow
« on: February 05, 2011, 08:31:57 pm »
I have been making some more bows.  Built this one for someone.  This bow is approximately 68" tip-to-tip and draws 47 lbs. @ 28"  The reflex is extreme when unbraced but the tips move a lot... thanks to James advice!  This model is fast!

I splashed some color across the limbs and it came out great looking...

Hope you all enjoy.

That's a great bow, did you need a form in order to make that bow?

Thanks for the compliments.

Yes, thats a carbonized bamboo belly on this one...been on bamboo back and belly binge lately.  Starting to like those quick limbs.

I use a form on this one for the initial glue-up.  Otherwise the reflex in the limbs Wood be longer less severe towards the tips...which isn't bad just different.  I use wedges on this one to put the belly on in the third stage.

I glue this one up in three stages with the riser inside the bamboo back and belly on the second step.

when you do boo belly, do you match up the nodes with the back, or stagger them?
do the back and belly lams taper in thickness?
is there any layer between back and belly?
love the look of the bow!

Don't match up the nodes on the back and belly.... you want to offset them or your bow will hinge between every node!

I prefer to taper the laminations....I like to use at least two laminations so I can bend it more while making it....

Thanks again for the compliments.

I agree with the great teacher as long as you add friend! :D

This one had three laminations...they each averaged about .060" so you could say the core was .180"...?

The biggest challenge for me is getting consistent thickness on the bamboo.  Seems like each one of them can be extremely different thickness at a given width....sometimes I try to measure it at a certain interval and sometime I just give the ole bend test until it looks as perfect as I can make them...
