Wohali Geluhvsga- A Red oak shorty
« on: February 21, 2011, 04:18:54 pm »
Hey all,

Finally got time to finish off my second bow. I haven't had much time to work on a bow since summer because I'm getting loaded with the HW   ;D. This little bow took me three tries and two failures to finally get it right. I kept using the same dimensions, but I tweaked the design a little bit each time until this one finally worked. I'm glad I kept working towards it because to me this bow looks absolutely stunning. There is just something about these shorty's... It was made out of a 2 x 1/2 red oak board that I got from lowes for about 2 bucks. Not bad eh? The grain wasn't that great so I backed it with black linen. I named this bow "Wohali Geluhvsga" which means screaming eagle since this I just earned my Eagle Scout rank and this little sucker really spits and arrow. It is 46"n2n and pulls exactly 50# at 22" which is just what I was shooting for. The handle is leather with rabbit fur and the string silencers are made out of wool yarn. The bow only takes about 1/2 and inch of set after shooting and relaxes back to dead straight after resting which I think is really good for a red oak board. Since this is my only my second bow I would really appreciate comments about the tiller. Thanks all.

Well, I think your money talks with this one.  ;D   Very nice bow and exceptionally so for 2nd bow. You could probably get another few inches out of her if you got the outside 1/3 of each limb bending slightly. But other than that. Well done!!!  8)

I'd say that is an excellent return on the investment. Nice looking little bow for sure.

The language is cherokee since that's the only native American language I could find a translator for... I know that this bow is nothing like the Cherokee bows, but I wanted a native sounding name... Plus some of my family came from that region hundreds of years ago so I might have some Cherokee in me somewhere...  :)

Pat B- I didnt want to strain this bow too much cause the grain wasn't that great... Plus the full draw is 22",  but in the picture I'm only pulling about 19" since the timing was slightly off.

Well it worked - you got a native sounding name and a native looking bow to go with it. Nice job.
