Rubber band type glue form questions
« on: January 19, 2011, 07:28:13 pm »
I feel like making a rubber band type glue form with the wood dowels. My questions to those that use them are:

1). What is your preferred diameter wood dowel?
2). What length beyond the edge of the form works best?
3). What width rubber band do you prefer?
4).  What is the preferred spacing is between the dowels?

I will be drilling through-holes in the form and I will glue the dowels in-place. I also plan to cut the rubber bands from some old inner tubes to width.

Thanks in advance

I cut my own 1/2" by 3/4" blocks then round the edges. I like them more square than round. All of them are around 4". I like the 1/4" rubber bands and I put them as close together as I easily can, about 1" between them.

I'm confused by your description of how you will use them with the form.
Everything happens for a reason, sometimes the reason is you made a bad decision.

Justin,

I have seen your glue-up form and I think it is quite interesting but it was not the style I had questions about.

The style I was referring to uses wood dowels placed below the surface of the form, plus rubber bands cut from old inner tubes for clamping and forming tension.  The bands are then criss-crossed across the glued up bow and form upon the dowels.

I use cheap rubber bands and pieces of wood on my wood bow forms.

Here is what I use. I did alter it after this and lowered the curve in the center. Thge pegs could be shorter as well.  It works excellent though. Here is a bow off this form after it was altered

Frank,

Nice lines and form!  That is exactly the type of form I was asking about (and I have already made).  Would you mind sharing the dimensions you used and/or prefer for the dowel diameter, spacing and length?
