I did it with sulfuric acid (for car batteries). Good results with muskrats and deerhides. The leather gets white after softening and shaping it dry with my biface. But I think it depends on how big is the animal or how thick is the hide to tan. Using less acid with a thin hide is a good idea, because some muskrathides tattered when stertching a little. It takes some time to do it right.
