Sassafras/Hickory Dimensions Last Call
« on: January 07, 2011, 11:00:08 am »

I have searched the archives to no avail....

I have glued up a laminated board stave.
Sassafras board 1 7/8" wide with a 1/8" hickory strip over. 72" total length.

I am aware this bow will come in light and take set.

I am thinking I will keep it 1 3/4" wide until 4" past the fades, then taper to 3/4" at the tips.

Then thickness taper to tiller in. Very slowly.

Anyone ever do this combo with success? Some have said it works, but they have not posted their results if it did.

Good cheap fun.

Five glueups in the pipeline right now.

Pete, I've never tried that combo but I would make the hickory backing a bit thinner. I made one or two sass selfbows years ago. They fretted and took set but that could easily have been me. I have a sass stave and have though many times about busting it out but usually talk myself out of it. No particular reason, it's just me.
With good tillering it should make a pretty good combo. Keeping it wide and long should help.
