How to remove wax from selfbow to stain it?
« on: December 28, 2010, 07:20:52 pm »
I have a selfbow that has no stain on it, and i believe it has tongue oil on it, than i know its been waxed. Just not sure about the tongue oil. I want to stain it because it is really light in color, being a hickory bow. What can i use to take wax off so it will take stain? Thanks a bunch.

Acetone or denatured alcohol and light sanding followed by another acetone wipe down and sanding should remove it fairly well.

...plus an oil based stain might be compatable with any remaining tung oil.

acetone will work on tung oil
i use mostly tung oil (other wise bees wax) as a bow sealer, knife handle sealer etc
i have used acetone to remove tung oil from wood, stone, glass
if its old tung oil and many coats you might just want to start with some real fine 220 grit or finer sander paper then the acetone
