Question about something I saw at Lowes.
« on: December 05, 2010, 01:24:17 am »
I was at Lowes today looking at some red oak boards to consider using for bow wood. As I was walking around the lumber section I noticed  some iron on wood laminate. My question is would this be a possible way to back a board bow. Just seemed like an interesting material to me.

Glue on wood vaneer can be used for a backing strip. I have heard of folks using two layers but I've never tried it.

Don't think the glue used on it will withstand the forces applied when the bow is drawn.

I used some of that iron-on oak veneer on a maple board bow and it worked alright. It has help up so far, although I have not shot too many arrows out of it. If I ever use it again, I will probably used my own glue rather than using the iron.

I used some maple veneer last winter to try backing  board bows with, and it failed miserably. The veneer was put on with tite bond, . The bows are fine but the veneer  cracked. I removed the veneers and the bows still shoot fine with no signs of problems.
