heat treated maple bow
« on: November 21, 2010, 11:33:00 pm »
Hello, finished another one. 48lb @ 26" maple bow. From a board but needed a couple rings cut down on top. Heated 1 1/2 inches reflex into it, still holds 1" after a day of shooting. Handle is just scraps of tanned deer hide i had laying around. hope yall enjoy..

This is my second heat treat so far.. And it should last as long as a regular bow.. I let it reach equilibrium in the basement for a week..

Looks like you didn't char the tips?  That's the one good place where it is definitely okay AND good heating heavy, allows you to get especially narrow on the tips.

i have shot this bow a few hundred times.. Pretty confident itll hold together, i stopped before it turned black. It does look really dark in the photo though. Time will tell i suppose.

So did you tiller the back of the bow and leave the belly "rough" from the original board?  I heat treat to that color now.  I used to go much lighter but believe the better result for white woods is to the level you took it.  Seems to me as long as your not lighting an ember in the process, your good.  Nicely done.
