Leave it in the ash paste until the hair begins to slip. You should check it every day anyway. I don't think you want to salt it if you plan to brain(egg) tan it. I've never done one so I'm just guessing here!  ;D

You can still braintan after salting with no problems,  you just have to rinse all the salt out really well.

We never do anything to ours but flesh ,roll up and put in the freezer if we can't rack it right away, never tried making the hair slip, but I would suggest doing as Pat said, cause when it slips it is real close to spoiling. :)

Brain tanning is very in depth. Its not hard but there is a lot to learn to produce a good hide.
A quick brake down of how we do it.
#1 Flesh it
#2 rack it
#3 Scrape off the hair and epidermis
#4 un rack it
#5 put the deer brain in a blender with water and blind it to a soup, then put it in a pot and bring it to a boil to kill any diseases or bacteria. dump in a 5 gal bucket and add about 1-2 gals of water.
#6 put hide in bane slurry
#7 ring it and soak it 3 times.
#8 sew up the hide into a sock
#9 Huck it up to a smoker and smoke it
#10 flip it inside out and smoke the other side
#11 cut out sting and soak it.
#12 put it back into the brains and soak and ring it 3 more times.
#13 ring it out real good and start braking it by stretching the hide every directing. you can do this on your knees out with a cable
#14 let it dry and stretch it every 10 mins until its dry
#15 sew it back up and smoke both sides.

And your done.
