will this hurt anything?

Ash, very straight grain, with some swirls, not all the way through.  Will it need backing?
Thanks,
Frode

If it doesn't rap the lintel, it might not be a longbow.

Those little "squiggles" are typical in ash from what I have seen. I believe they are the remnents of a grub but it shouldn't effect your bow. When in doubt a simple cloth or paper backing should reassure you.

nah, that's just a bit of character, You sometimes get 'em where a knot is just off the stave (e.g it's 99.99% removed) and there's just a sort of shadow or ghost remaining.
That's rather poetic doncha think?  ::)

Thanks guys,
I kind of wondered, Pat, they didn't look like serious deformities, but I've never worked with ash before, so ask first, then cut, eh?
Poetry is good, Del!  Poetic and ghostly.  Maybe I'll have to name this bow "Lovecraft".
