Bow named K75 / Belly lamed infantry bow (not for bom)
« on: October 31, 2010, 03:23:03 pm »
Hey fellas,
Saw the recent post by Ken 75 where he had the belly lam on a bow. Looked pretty slick so thought I'd give it a try. Had some scrap pieces of walnut, ash. and maple so this is what I come up with:

66" ash core backed with blackwalnut. 36" walnut belly lam, followed by 24" maple lam. Weighs 65# @ 28". Plan view is a "double diamond" and the profile is typical Chineese.

I steam bent the ash core then glued on the backer. After that was dry I did each belly lam seperate and let @ one cure. When I unwrapped it all I did was "feather edge" the ends of the lams.....didn't have to tiller anything at all. The bow has no finish at all yet, and has shot roughly 200 arrows and it's very strong and has excellent speed. Will get somemore pics when it's finished.

Hope ya like it, couldn't wait to post because it was so easy to make....and even though the shape was a guess it still made a decent bow.....I'm impressed, so thanks for the idea Ken.

Thanks for the nice comments, but it was really Ken's idea, just carried a little bit farther. The main thing for posting it was to let ya know it's a way to tiller in a bow as it's built. I believe that with some experience a person could layup a bow and know it's profile and basic draw weight before it came out of the mold.

A little food for thought is all.

Very nice, Rich!
Are the outer limbs walnut also?  And, are they separate lamination's from the handle area, or same lam feathered all the way through (small monitor, trifocals, sorry)?
Thanks,
Frode
If it doesn't rap the lintel, it might not be a longbow.

Aero,
It's a strain but the long levers do open like a big working recurve, so at  full draw it almost feels like the cams rolled over on a compound. I'm no expert on the subject, but some friends told me that when the working recurves "open" the string angle opens and it feels like the weight dropped 10 pounds.......
Thanks for the compliment, but look at the white knuckles on both hands.....the old man's gettin a work out.

dang nice bow Rich  !  full draw looks like its gonna put some power into the arrow.
i knew if i stayed around here long enough i would get blamed for something

i have to say decreasing belly lam length does make an easy bow to tiller once its cleaned up and feathered its bout done. nice work
