Braintanned plains war shirt
« on: October 23, 2010, 01:25:51 pm »
Here is a braintanned war shirt I have been working on. Might add a little red wool and a small amount of beadwork to the bibs. I finally got four good hides to work with. It is thick and warm. A shot of bows in progress also.

Very nice, grunt. I've got two hides, now I need two more for a shirt also.

I had a nice 39sq ft commercial tanned hair on buffalo robe that a friend really wanted. I had this robe for over twenty five years and kept it in a cedar chest. Anyway I sold the robe to my friend for a very good price and he came back to me later with a gift of three braintanned deerskins. I had one already and I finally had enough to make the shirt I had been thinking about for a long time. What goes around comes around.

Grunt, your shirt looks well made! I highly suggest adding the beads you're thinking about on the bib and the red wool. Any extra bits will just add to the appeal of the shirt!

A good friend of mine has a closet full of war shirts of amazing quality and I have little experience evaluating them, per se, but his are always decorated. :)

Thanks for affirmations guys. I'm going to add tradecloth, beadwork, and maybe some scalplocks and paint the shirt eventually. I think the additional elements will be added slowly, over time and each element will have a "meaning"

Nice ! I have a deer hide in the process right now, hoping to get an elk in a few weeks to go with it. (I might have enough for a good hunting shirt)
Getting scalps for scalplocks might be a little tricky these days, most of those gangbangers cut off all they're hair    ;D  '  Frank

I really like that a lot, Grunt.  Those bows you've got going look interesting, also.  Really nice work.
