If you are going to use burlap, silk or linen for backing on a red oak board bow at about 45#,
how many layers would you use? It's not a perfect board but not too bad.

Those materials won't add any weight to your bow but will protect it from splinters lifting along the back. You will have to build the bow to the weight you want. Add the backing either before you start or after she's done. Pat

Thanks. But I want to know if one layer is enough and can you use 2 peices joined at the riser?

You can join it at the handle.
Actually most soft backings are easier to deal with if they are in 2 pieces and joined at the handle. Because there is usually no(or not much) stresses in the handle area of stiff handled bows you shouldn't have to do more than glue it down and add a handle wrap.
One layer of cloth should be plenty enough for protection. By adding more, you are adding weight which detracts from the bows cast. Pat
