Hill and River Cane Pics?

 Can anyone put a few closeup pics of river cane and hill cane. I have some that are totally round and some that have a flat spot between nodes. If I had a camera I'd put one up. But :(

Thank you. I have both and have made a few out of both. The river cane I have, as anyone that lives in Alabama knows, is very accessable. The hill cane I have a few patches and am looking for more. It;s all over too but, just not looking hard enough...lol

In what region does hill cane grow i live in northeast TX we have loads of river cane but have not seen any hill cane is there a big difference in the appearance any pics of the whole plant would be great

Hill cane (Arundaneria appalaciana) is indigenous to the Appalachian Mountains. It is more similar to it's cousin switch cane(A. tecta) than it is to it's other cousin river cane(A. gigantia). These are the only native North American bamboo.   IMO, hill cane makes the best arrows, switch cane next and river cane last. All make good arrows.

It looks like you heated and compressed your nodes?  Did you do that while they were still green or did you dry them and then compress them?  Bill

I rolled the nodes down using a hardwood block Bill. Best to get on 'em once they're dry enough to work. Usually about 4 weeks. ART

Is there a book for arrow building from cane? The hill can gives me fits trying to sight down it to get them straight. The others like river cane or Lowes cane are much easier. any suggestions?

ive straightened a bit of it.  straightens just like bamboo or river cane for me.  just straighten between the nodes first, and then the nodes.  works like a charm

Contact Chris Cade(Mechslasher). He wrote a pamphlet on working cane to arrows. Lots of good info in it too.
