hickory on hickory bow
« on: August 23, 2010, 09:32:53 am »
Well, I have been using this technique on kids' bows for quite a while, so I decided to make a full-sized bow by splitting a hickory blank and gluing it back to its other half.  I glued in a slight reflex using TB III, then glued on a handle and tips made of different colored woods.  It is 58 1/2" ntn, and pulls 45 at 27".  It is a smooth, sweet shooter.

Hey Dan,
I too like the "self-backed" bows, and the hickory backed hickory makes for a really tough bow. Ya got some nice lines going on it for sure, nice bow and 45# is plenty for deer (w/ good sharp heads and good shootin)

Thanks, Rich.  I forgot to tell you all that Doug Bell, my bow-building buddy, put the stain and finish on this bow.  I was knocked out by what a great job he did, using oil stain and wipe-on poly.

Very nice.  So what are the advantages of this technique compared to just a stave hickory bow?  Is it because you can glue in reflex easier.

The same advantages you get from doing any laminated bow.  Reflex induced from gluing is different from reflex by heat.  Reflexing by heat puts stress on wood.  According to Baker, glued in reflex actually reduces stress.  This Theory is talked about at length in the TBB's.

Hmm, must have missed it.  Is this in the 4th edition when they talk laminated?  Guess I need to go back thru it.

I think it's TBB 3.  You can also do a search here for "Perry" reflex.

Nice bow, hickory backed hickory is a proven good combo. A lot of flight records were set using it. Steve
