dogwood D bow dimensions ??
« on: August 20, 2010, 07:17:34 pm »
just cut a 2-1/4" (at the top end, slightly larger at the bottom) dogwood sapling in order to make a
62" bend through the handle bow. got one stave that has a bit of reflex, the other a bit of deflex and
expect that I'll flip the tips on that one.
wondering how wide I should leave 'em such that I'll end up with a 45-50# at 26" bow.
seems that 1-3/8" should be plenty wide. does that sound about right ??

Never argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Glenn, I haven't made a bow with dogwood yet. I have a few staves but just haven't gotten around to it.   I believe you can treat it like hickory and come out good. Steve Parker built a dogwood bow not long ago. It was a stiff handle though. I think I'd go 1 1/2" to start and narrow later if it is coming out too thin. You can scoop in on each side of the handle if needed for comfort.
