Hazel with flipped tips
« on: August 13, 2010, 01:01:50 pm »
Hi!

A little Hazel 62" 33#  28" 1,5" wide to 0,4" . One tip is static and glued due to crack when steamed the other is bending I think.
The bow is not outlined according to grain. I damaged the back some also so I sanded it a bit. In other words it's living on the edge, but I have god faith in Hazel I made 7 bows from it so far and none has broken yet.
I'm real happy with the tiller, the top limb (right in the pics) has two knots which I left thicker

Cool bow - how are you putting in the bends, with a form or by hand?

Thanks Parnell!

Bend with form, I didn´t get the curve I really wanted. Bending was more difficult than thought. Gonna make a new form.

I love Hazel, I think it's an under used and under-rated wood these days.
Have you stained that? It looks a lot darker than the Hazel we have in the UK it's really white here.
Lovely tiller, what's the grip made of ?

very cool, profile is very nice. the upper limb looks like its twisting a bit when drawn, but tiller is otherwise good.

Nice bow!  Tiller looks nice on it as well as the finish work.  Glad to see your patch is holding up too.  I gave my bow that I patched to one of my bowyer friends and we shot a 3D course with it last weekend.  It is still going strong.   Overall great job on this bow!   :)  Got it bookmarked for August Self Bow of the Month, too.  :) :)

That tiller is excellent. Well done. Did you violate the grain on the back? Jawge

Thanks a lot guys!

Del:  It's Birch bark. I put some oil with a little pigment on it but the dark stuff on the back is some of the bark. I debarked after 2-3 days since cutting it, then the bark sort of stain the back. And I agree Hazel is excellent, maybe the best wood I can get around here about the same as Wych Elm (only tried Elm twice though).

Jawge: Not really violate I think my tiller rope broke and the bow landed bad. Got some pressure marks on the the back so I sanded them away and the whole back as smooth as I could. But if you look at the pic at the handle from the back you can see the grain going out at an angle at least I think they are..
