Bang went the Bow

Heres some shots of a busted linen/ red oak board bow. It was too narrow, 11/2 and too short 61" for the draw I was going for 55# at 28" I probably could have tillered it a bit better also. This is the first red oak board bow I have had chrysalis.It was dead dry and the cell structure looked like it was brittle. Home depo wood. Should have made a 40# D bow out of that board. Enjoy

dude,

i know exactly wht you are going through.  one has to really search for the best and even that is not a guarantee.  better luck on the next one.

I have made a number of bows from Hope Depot red oak. I keep it 1 3/4 to 2 inches wide and 68-70 inches long, and I have never had any problems.

The wood might have been dry, but those chrysalis on the belly point to the real reason the bow blew.

im with Gordon on this

chrysallis shows what the problem was
too little wood doing to much work in to little an area(bendy to much in that spot)
like ya said,should have tillered it a little better

like others have said,ontp the next one  ;)

I also believe I was asking the bow to do too much for it's length and width and stiff handle. I have a 1x7x72 dead straight red oak from Home Depot that will make three 2" wide by 68" pyramid bows with 6" handle sections.  I'll get more wood working in the next few ones.
