I have seen different posts on Ambush bows. What is an ambush bow ?

No no, it's made from the wood of the 'Am Bush, it's a bit like a Pork Tree but smaller

The ambush bow  "title" was a contest a few years ago that Dean Torges started. Build a bow 58" or less, pulling 60@#( or more) @ 28" .There was a list of ten criteria that it had to make in order to be entered in the contest, but it all boiled down to,  It had to stay functional, and retain it's shape,poundage, for a week long testing through the most humid time of the year in Ohio.

Many ideas came to surface,many bows tried,many failed. I participated in it and learned a great deal about shorter bows and designs.

Seems like for the first one all were intermingled, maybe.  Then for the second there were classes for composite, selfbow, etc. but I don't recall they, the second batch, were ever judged.  But yes, generally the purpose was to assess all variations.  Given the criteria, as in real life, every design/materials choice has an offsetting trade-off.

Timo is so humble, he didn't recall being the bowyer who won.

I learned a bunch about bowyerin' doing challenge bows.  Mostly that a simple design well executed will pretty much hold it's own with all comers.

That's really neat. I have a nice stave that won't really make much of a typical flatbow, but maybe try something a little different

As i recall, it was Dean in cooperation with Brian at The Bowyers Journal, probably why the second batch never got judged when the journal changed ownership?
