Elm RD Bow (not for BOM)
« on: August 01, 2010, 10:34:52 am »
I made this bow for an aboriginal woman that lives in a neighbouring city.  She wants to hunt Deer, from her back porch  :), and even though her friends tried to talk her into a wheel bow she wanted to hunt with wood.  I wanted to make her something that had good handling characteristics and good performance.  I was initially going to make her a recurve, she liked the looks of them at an event I where I had a display.  I decided to make her an RD bow instead because they are easier to brace and more user friendly.  The bow is 60" long with 1 1/2" wide limbs and pulls 42# @ 26".  Here's some pictures.

Nice bow Marc.

I can appreciate the major bowyers on here for at least one thing that they contribute. Besides all your contributions to the PA community, its this style bow that you are the master of no doubt.

V clean, simple, and pretty. I like the sculptural lines of the handle.

Ditto. I'm hoping to make one like this in my future. Hopefully it will turn out half as good. Great job.

Very nice Marc!   :)  I am always amazed at the amount of reflex you are able to keep when you construct one of your bows... How much did this one start with and end up keeping?

Nice looking bow Marc, I'm sure she will be happy with it. What kind of wood are the tip overlays?

I think it started with 4" of reflex and kept about 2"

The handle has a lam of Bloodwood to finish and the overlays are also Bloodwood, in the hopes she draws blood with the bow.  The string is also red FF.  I put a leather shelf on the bow and a white leather wrap to finish it up.  I made her 3 target arrows and 3 hunting arrows to go with the bow, she's already lost 1 of the target arrows  :)

That's a sweet bow Marc. I don't normally care for cut-in shelves, but I really like the way you did it.
