Pit River-Yew and Sinew-And other west coast bows
« on: July 19, 2010, 04:34:02 pm »
Finally got a chance to finish this one! This is what Katie (my wife) will be using at the GLLI this year.

Pit River Bow
Heartwood yew and sinew
44" N-N
40#@24"

I love the west coast bows. I have made a bunch of these and Katie had been wanting one for a long time so here it finally is.

Back:

Belly:

Side....Note retained reflex....this has been pretty typical of what I have been retaining on these bows. About 2.5-3"

Tips with rawhide wrap:

Note bent tab knocks. Done with a "kerf"

Full Draw:

And here she is added to my personal bows. The top one is one of my first ones I made and is the worst of the lot. It retained very little reflex. the others stay around 2.5-3". I was using the middle two at the Michigan Trad Bow Hunters gathering in Grayling last month. It rained and was humid all weekend and both of those middle bows gave up nothing to the weather.

Thanks for looking,

Steve

Not for BOM...thanks Josh.

Great bows, Steve. I have a shorty sinew backed bow in my future. May even put horn on the belly.

Thanks Josh, I  love making them!

Pat, Thats cool man. I have a few wood cores ready to go. I need horn lams though.

Legionnaire, I process my own sinew. I make a lot of sinew bows. When I sit down and process sinew I sit down in the grass for an entire Saturday and pond out 100 leg tendons at a time. Once you pound it enough its amazing how fast you can get it prepared.

Very nice bow Steve.

Do you heat in some of the reflex at the handle?

If it doesn't rap the lintel, it might not be a longbow.

Steve, those are great looking bows. Those look like museum quality to me.

Those are great! I really like this style, do you have any build alongs on any of them? And could you make one with just Yew no backing except sap wood? thanks for sharing
