scouting staves
« on: May 07, 2012, 11:46:27 am »
I was able to get into the woods yesterday to scout some staves.
Only had 30-45 mins to do this and did not get too deep in, but I did see some hornbeam (muscle wood) a lot of yellow birch, and what I think may be some hophornbeam but I am not sure on that yet. The leaves are just starting to come out here so it is difficult using them for id was a little tricky at best.  :o
I will try and post some pics of that later tonight maybe some of you could help with that id.
I have quite a bit of area to explore once again from a small crick up into some hills lots of area.
One question is whether or not yellow birch makes a good bow wood?
Would it be worth the time and effort to harvest some for a first time bow maker?
I plan on going out again soon to do some real scouting to see what else I can find.

any help or recommendations would be great!
thanks in advance

Doug
