Post Oak as bow wood?
« on: May 06, 2012, 12:01:51 am »
I have the opportunity to cut up and split a big post oak tree that fell over a few weeks ago. It has about a 20 ft long trunk and probably 30 inch diameter and really straight..

Thanks,
Cipriano

I'm pretty sure all the oaks (Quercus sp) do great for bows.

Well, its a white oak, so will likely make a bow.  I'd expect to deal with set some.  Either way, if its real straight, I'd sure give it a go.  Probably a lot of good staves to be had in there for experimentation.

I cut a lot of post oak for firewood and I have a seasoned stave thats been sittin in my shop for a couple of years. It should make a good bow but I havent built one from it yet. Good luck and let us know how it goes.
